Officers responded to Czig Meister Brewing at 106 Valentine St. where staff had removed a man, Jeremiah Heistand, for sneaking an unauthorize alcoholic beverage into the brewery, Hackettstown police said.
Hiestand then walked past officers at the outdoor entrance and directly toward the brewery exit, where he unsuccessfully attempted to gain entry, police said.. Officers made contact with Hiestand and advised him that he had to leave the event; he was then escorted to his residence, police said.
Hiestand was observed on Valentine Street heading toward the brewery and was holding an unopened can of beer and a large, clear, hard plastic water bottle, police said. He was told to leave again, but he continued to yell random, unintelligible statements at the police, officers said. He began to crack open the beer can, and officers warned him that if he opened it, he would be arrested for drinking in public, police said.
After a few seconds, he fully opened the can, and an officer took it from his hand, police said. Hiestand then faced the officer and shouted a profanity, proceeding to slam his water bottle down at the officers' feet, where it ultimately shattered on the sidewalk, police said.
As the officer attempted to arrest Hiestand, he turned and fled on foot but was eventually apprehended, police said. He was physically resistant the entire time and was also under the influence of psilocybin, a.k.a. magic mushrooms, police said.
Hiestand was charged with resisting arrest, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, littering, disorderly conduct, and consuming alcohol in a public area, police said He was then transported to Hackettstown Medical Center and released pending a court appearance, police said.
